Country More than Mapping is a project with Aboriginal people talking with Regenerative farmers, traditional Farmers and stakeholders to share knowledge. The project will focus on regions along the Murrumbidgee River in southern NSW.
We want to start the conversation and build a bridge of understanding.
Kim Mahood, an Artist and Author spends 6 months a year for the past 10 years working with remote communities on “Co Mapping”.
It is about developing a large hand-painted topographic maps that integrate both scientific information and local Indigenous and current land management knowledge.
What began as a project to map and record the overlap between these knowledge systems has evolved into a process of recording detailed information about Country. Including water quality, waterbirds, fish, fire, vegetation, and paleogeomorphology and stories.
The co-mapping workshop is designed to introduce people to the practical methodologies of creating a cross-cultural map, and the essential ways to prepare the ground before embarking on a co-mapping project. The workshop covers consultation and planning, developmental evaluation, mapping programs, materials and methods, painting and iconography, the map as a story-telling tool, and the map as a means of recording and reporting information.
The first 2 day Earth Canvas workshop will take place between Tumut and Wagga Wagga during November 2025.
